Tips on choosing a therapist

Since psychotherapy is achieved through talking, choose someone you feel comfortable with, someone who’s easy to talk to, who listens to what you say,  and gives you the impression that your words and feelings are important.

During your first appointment with a therapist, pay attention to how well she listens to you.

Also, make note of your internal reaction to her.  When she talks to you, there will be times when you feel challenged, and if you do, it probably means that she’s good at her job. But if you find you feel judged, criticized, or belittled then you need to say so. Psychotherapy provides the environment for  exploring yourself with your therapist’s help in an accepting, relaxed, private, and safe atmosphere.

Your work with your therapist should be challenging, and will probably be tiring.  But, you should feel supported throughout the process and never ridiculed or demeaned. Respect is part of the foundation in a therapeutic atmosphere.

In this setting, you find things you didn’t realize about yourself. And you learn to accept yourself and your feelings more completely, to be more at home with who you are, and able to give more freely and receive more freely of what you need to be happy.

My patients range in age from 2 to 100.
